Acupuncture is one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine. Acupuncture works by manipulating and balancing energy (Qi) that flows through pathways called meridians. This is done by gently inserting hair-fine, sterile, disposable needles into specific points in the body. According to a World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture can be used effectively for a variety of ailments. This flow of Qi in the body can be disrupted by a host of factors including illness, traumatic injury, lifestyle or stressful events. The disruption of Qi can manifest as disease in the body, mind or spirit. Tom practices a specific type of acupuncture called “Five Element”. This style was practiced in China until the cultural revolution when it was abandoned because it focused upon treating the patient’s spirit. His teacher JR Worsley, DAc. went to China in the 70’s and brought the Five Element teachings back to England and subsequently the United States. Tom is forever indebted to Dr. Worsley for his work and teaching.
